Cameron on the winners's podium

A group of seven MCS athletes travelled to the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow on Thursday 4th February to attend the Scottish Schools’ Indoor Athletics Championships. Being the first proper athletic event of the season, our boys did exceptionally to hold their own, despite the little training we’ve managed as a team so far this year. In the under 16 events, Angus S showed his talent when he equalled his current high jump personal best and finished the boys under 16 high jump with a very respectable 5th. This is an especially good result considering Angus is under 15 and will get another chance to compete in this age group next year. In the sprints Matt F, Scott M, James L and Ben F all ran good times to put themselves in contention for semi-finals and Ben and Scott in particular ran well in the 200m. The talent in this year group is outstanding: they really could become unbeatable in the sprinting events in Edinburgh.
In the over 16 events, Claude M and Cameron G showed some real guts and determination in the 60m sprints, with Claude reaching the final and running a personal best of 7.42s. This result is excellent considering Claude is able to run in this age group for another two years. Cameron (pictured) was our only athlete running in the hurdles events and he made the 60m hurdles his own, powering to a gold and setting himself a personal best of 8.43s. An excellent result considering he too has another year in this age group.
While the boys found some of the track running difficult as they had never experienced indoor athletics, this was an excellent event to expose some of our talent at. There is certainly no shortage of athletic ability at Merchiston and this event has laid the platform for what will hopefully become a very good season for our athletics.
