taking aimOn Sunday 27th September 7 boys from Chalmers West to Laidlaw, several parents and Mr King met at Cluny Clays in Fife for the Scottish Schools competition. The discipline was English Sporting, which is a series of clay targets designed to copy the flight paths of various game animals from driven pheasant and grouse to bolting rabbits and springing teal.

There were teams and individuals entered from several Scottish schools – Gordon's, George Heriots, Strathallan, Loretto and Dollar.

We entered two teams – a senior A team of 4 plus a junior team. Both teams shot some of the same targets but in slightly different combinations and numbers. The seniors shot 50 targets and the juniors shot 30.

shootingAfter the first 2 stands it became apparent that the boys were seriously on form with Jack, Will and John all cleaning up all their targets with centre-of-the pattern dusted kills.  This performance continued throughout the course with few targets lost by most of the boys. It was a testing and varied layout that would test the best of shots.  We finished with very healthy scores.

Some of us then had lunch in the restaurant while others went back out on the course to shoot in the Father and Son competition.

Best senior team – Merchiston
Senior high gun and overall best shot – Will B – Merchiston
Best Junior team – Merchiston
Junior high gun – John  G – Merchiston
Parent and Child – Jack and Alan  CW - Merchiston

It was a terrific day and the boys performed superbly. Special mention must go to Will B, whose shooting has gone from strength to strength and is now likely to shoot at the commonwealth games for the Isle of Man, and John G, who shot like a pro after only a few times doing it. Very well done to all seven boys and I am optimistic for the future of  clay shooting at Merchiston now we have some silverware to show for it!
