junior dramaWhilst Drama is not an academic subject at Merchiston, a curriculum is followed in order to develop and sustain dramatic quality, along with a continuity of dramatic experience.

The Junior School stages a major musical biannually, in the senior school Theatre, and these seek to involve every child in the House. Recent productions have included Animal Farm, Oliver!, Brush Up Your Shakespeare, Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Little Shop of Horrors .

Drama is available each week as a Junior Activity and a variety of techniques are taught in order to improve the overall quality of acting within productions. These have included mime, physical theatre and improvisation.
Regular trips are run to the theatre for all age groups in the Junior School and the boys also enjoy visiting theatre companies. Every other year, the younger boys in Pringle join with St George's School for Girls to take part in a Scottish Opera Workshop.

Debating

This is a popular activity and can be taken as a junior activity. There are fun hat debates and balloon debates, often with St George's School for Girls, with whom we also hold an annual debating workshop. More formal debates are also held, preparing boys for debating in the Senior School.
