Welcome to the official website of Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh, a leading Boys' Boarding and Day School in Edinburgh, Scotland.
In 2008 we are celebrating our 175th Anniversary. Charles Chalmers founded our School in 1833, with 25 boys. While today’s Merchiston is significantly different from the Merchiston of 1833, it shares values with those established originally. “All unbecoming or ungentlemanly conduct is strictly forbidden” might be expressed in different language today, but the sentiments are still at the heart of our ethos. Class-sizes are, interestingly, very similar, with early classes often around 16. Discipline is still vitally important, but no longer enforced with a ‘tawse’, and the inspectors would not be happy if we followed the original rule: “The outer door will be locked, two minutes after the bell has been rung”!
No website can convey the warmth of Merchiston and the welcome you would receive if you visited us, but we hope that it will give you a flavour of Merchiston and that you will visit yourself soon, whether you are a boy or parent interested in joining us, a Merchistonian, or current parent!
