ski trip

19 boys and 4 staff travelled to the high resort of Sölden for a week of skiing set in the Austrian Tyrol.  There was a strong Merchistonian link to this year’s trip as it was arranged through Snowtraxx - the ski company run by former pupil, Stuart Murphy – and we were joined by former teacher of Physics, Rob Armstrong, who completed his BASI training last year and was one of our instructors.

As in previous years, we departed by coach and travelled via Dover across Europe.

The hire shop at the resort was newly constructed and the ski fitting arrangements and storage facilities were the best we've ever experienced.  As a result, all boys and staff were quickly equipped and we were soon on the gondola heading up for the first of our six days on the slopes.

Sölden has a reputation for very good late season snow and that was indeed the case this year.  The scale and variety of terrain, together with fresh snow during the week, meant that the boys could enjoy developing their carving skills on-piste, ski on the high glacier and experience the delights of off-piste skiing in powder snow.  Of course, the snowpark and the slalom and ski cross courses were also highly popular.   All of that was augmented by excellent mountain restaurants and by state-of-the-art chairlifts.   As the days progressed, the skiing skills of all boys improved greatly and they clearly enjoyed their time on the slopes - testament to the superb standard of the instruction they received.

In the evenings the boys enjoyed swimming in the local leisure pool, 9-pin bowling, football and a pizza & dvd night.  This was another hugely succesful trip.
