Indoor Football v Cargilfield (31/10/08) Won 14 - 6

In the first game we were rather disorganised and inaccurate, and were unsure of the rules around the keeper.  With captain James L on in the second match we were totally in charge.  Without him again in the final game we scored some tremendous goals: Jack H and Rob W supreme!  Fine performance generally.  Geordie, Matthew  and Dougal...everyone really one their best form.

U12 Football v Loretto (31/10/08) Won 4-2

They had a good team but we completely outplayed them and spent the first quarter in their half.  With a little more care and patience the game would have been won.  Our defence when occasionally tested looked ok until Gregor limped off, then it fell apart.  Ben was alone in doing a good job (Joiner Jersey).  Back on attack we continued well.  Goals by Jordan, Jack, Duncan and Danny (Joiner Jersey).  Overall pretty impressive and highly enjoyable.

U10/U11 Swimming v Compass (09/10/08) Won 166-146

The U10 and U11 swimming team had their annual swimming match against The Compass school.  Compass has certainly had the better of Merchiston over the last couple of years so the boys were keen to turn that around.  Lochy E and Angus P got the team off to a fantastic start claiming a 1 and 2 in the U10 backstroke.  Peter and Fingal followed this up with a 1 and 2 in the U11 backstroke.  The rest of the individual races were very close with Tom H winning the U11 breastroke and Xander winning the U10 freestyle.  Merchiston dominated the relays winning 4 out of 5 in both age groups.  A great start afternoon and an enjoyable win.

U12 Football v Fettes (06/10/08) Won 6 - 4
Best Fettes team we have played against for a long time.  It was a really worthwhile evening.  Goals were let in too easily in the middle game and we did not move up in attack.  However, we got more on top in the final match.  Captain Danny had a very good night, as did Tim.  But the real star was Ben who won the Joiner Jersey!

U12 & U13 Swimming v Fettes (2/10/08) Lost 83-107

The U12 and U13 swimming team had their annual swimming match against Fettes. Last year’s fixtures were incredibly tight with Fettes winning both by the narrowest of margins. The individual races were neck and neck with Fettes in front by two points heading into the relay’s. Peter C, Jamie M and James L all won their races respectively. Merchsiton took the lead for the first time winning the U12 Medley relay, but it was all Fettes from then on who won the next 5 relays in empathic style. The boys tried hard but the Fettes 3 rd and 4 th swimmers were just too strong for ours. An enjoyable evening by all, with fantastic support from fellow team mates and parents. We are certainly looking forward to the return match, which we can hopefully win.

U12 Football v Cargilfield (15/09/08) Won 4 - 2

We were on top throughout but never managed to get into a confident position.  Quite a few players were a little below their best, and Cargilfield were big and busy.  In the end quality won the day, but we have to be sharper next time we play them.

U13 Football v Fettes (22/09/08) Won 9 - 0
Fettes played spiritedly throughout ensuring a good challenge all the way through, but they rarely looked like scoring.  Merchiston played some intelligent football and lots of goals were scored by Rob, Jack and Dougal.    Stout defence was headed up by Geordie.

Swimming v Clifton Hall (12/09/08) W 46-22

The U11 swimming team headed off to Clifton Hall for a swimming match – after last year's defeat the boys were keen reverse that result.  We started off strongly with Jamie M and Rory L claiming first and second in the 50 yards front crawl - this continued until Clifton Hall won the butterfly.  Merchiston finished the gala with an emphatic win in the Cannon relay to round off a great team performance.  A very enjoyable afternoon by all, and hopefully these swimmers continue to go from strength to strength
