Week 11

Site work finally began behind Rogerson Houses on preparation for the new Sixth Form House.

The Lower Sixth staged their play 'Teachers', written by themselves, and featuring their interpretation of some staff when they were at school. Pringle held its own Prizegiving on Wednesday evening. Outside of School, some senior pupils were on Arran completing their Duke of Edinburgh Expedition for the Gold Award. The Third Form went to York on Tuesday, and a variety of social events for both pupils and parents were held during the week. On Tuesday afternoon, a Rock Concert in the marquee featured both staff and pupil bands. The latter included contributions from both the Sixth Form, and Shell's group The Mystic Floorboards. Pictured left is the staff band of Ms Cohen, Mr Campbell and Mr King.

Friday night was the End-of-year service followed by the First Prizegiving. For Upper VI Leavers, a ball followed in the marquee. The official end of term was after Saturday's Prizegiving, at which the speaker was Lord Laidlaw of Rothiemay. He is pictured here with Mr and Mrs Hunter (left), and Mr and Mrs Abram.

Summer holiday trips include another Fiji Project Expedition, a cricket tour to Holland and a CCF trip to California. These will be reported on in the Autumn.

Week 10

Poor weather curtailed outdoor activities this week, but despite the conditions, The Games went ahead in a rather misty and damp arena on Friday (photo left). The Pringle sponsored walk had to be shortened, and cricket fixtures were cancelled.

The Sixth Form Festival began for Lower Sixth boys on completion of their exams. Two groups headed to Abernethy for Leadership training type activities, and various talks and outings were arranged at school, including trips to opera, theatre, and a talk by a Holocaust survivor. Those doing English went to Stratford for two nights to see King Lear and Macbeth.

Almost all other year groups were involved with trips out of school too: juniors went to Bamburgh, others to Glasgow and J4, J5 and the I Form went on camps. Shell went to Alton Towers, and the IV Form departed on Saturday for their CCF Camp.

Week 9

This was exam week, but certainly did not enjoy the weather often associated with exams. Indeed, the rain caused cancellation of all sporting fixtures at the end of the week. On Wednesday, a large number of Merchistonians, some with family members, came to a reunion for those who left 50 years ago or more. On Friday, we announced the creation of a new Charity partnership with The Place2be.

The annual Music Competition saw a high standard of performance for both the Macleod (Junior) Cup and the Forbes Bowl. The former was won by Craig (Shell) on the piano, playing Debussy, and the latter by Andrew (UVI) on the clarinet.

Week 8

With internal exams fast approaching, the academic focus of the week for all year groups was revision; public exams are currently in full swing too for Fifth and Sixth Forms.

Further money was raised for our ongoing support of St Luke's Leprosarium in India by an organ recital given by School Organist David Turner on Friday evening. This was attended by various visitors from around Edinburgh as well as a small group of staff and boys, and over £160 was added to our fund. As well as listening to the music, the audience watched a slideshow of artwork and architecture appropriate to the music, chosen and shown by Alex Anderson, who is coordinating the charitable collections.

Half term & Week 7

At the beginning of the break some boys took part in Duke of Edinburgh Expedition as part of their Silver Awards. After the return to School on Thursday evening, on Sunday a group of about 40 boys from both Chalmers Houses took part in a team-building outdoor activity day near Biggar. Over the weekend, there was cricket played at School by various teams, and in Yorkshire by the Pringle 1st XI who travelled to Aysgarth and Malsis Schools for a match at each.

Week 6

The Pipe Band went to play at Beating Retreat at Holyrood on Thursday evening: this is an annual fixture in their calendar.

The Third Form went to visit the Buddhist monastery on Friday: this has also become an annual event for that year group in the RS Department's year (click link for photos). A group containing boys from various senior year groups went away on Friday to complete a weekend camping expedition as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.

The major event of the week was Commemoration Day. The Dinner Dance the night before in the marquee proved very popular with parents and guests. Art and Design Exhibitions were set up for visitors and pupils, many of whom attended the preview on Thursday night. Pictured is an automated scarecrow by Mark W (V Form). After the Service on Saturday, at which the speaker was Professor Peter Guthrie, instrumentalists and singers gave a concert in the marquee which included all the School bands: both pipe bands, jazz band, concert band and two rock bands. The Close Harmony Group also performed.

Half-term then began.

Week 5

Girls from St George's joined with Pringle on Wednesday for a singing workshop in the afternoon. A small group of boys went to take part in the Three Peaks Race at the weekend but were thwarted by poor weather conditions. Some Pringle boys went on a camp at Blakerston (photo left). Mr Rickard departed on his sabbatical, from which he will return at the end of term.

We have been preparing a webcam which will continuously monitor the progress of the new Sixth Form House on this website, in anticipation of the cutting of the first turf, scheduled for the 4th June. Lord Laidlaw visited in preparation for his speech at prizegiving.

Week 4

Life in Pringle House has been incredibly busy this week. The main event was the staging by the Juniors of Little Shop of Horrors from Wednesday to Friday. The show proved very popular, and many boys came to see it. The boys were also involved in joint activities with St George's in the shape of 'Maths Fun Days', hosted this year at St G's. On Thursday, a swimming team competed in the annual Merchiston Primary Schools' Swimming Gala.

On Thursday we had a very close athletics match against Watson's the outcome of which was determined by the final relay race. A storming run by Jamie (LVI) clinched the match in our favour by 5 points.

Week 3

Tuesday saw the first major athletics match of the season, and convincing wins for Merchiston at both over 17 and under 17 levels. While some members of the Senior School were occupied with either trial or real public exams, at the other end of the School, the cast of the Pringle musical were rehearsing for their performance next week following the arrival of the man-eating plant (left).

Over the weekend, members of Rogerson West climbed four Munroes, including Ben Nevis, and raised around £1,000 for charity. Sunday's whole School service was led by members of the Upper Sixth, who reflected on the theme of creation and our treatment of the planet. After the service, the Headmaster and Barbara entertained many Upper Sixth parents, pupils and staff to a drinks reception at Castle Gates and lunch in the Dining Hall.

Week 2

At the start of the week, boys in Shell and above attended a Higher Education Fair held at School. Our MSP David McLetchie visited on Tuesday and spoke to the whole School. The main event of Wednesday was the Celebration of Sport dinner which many boys attended.

On Friday evening, the Chapel Choir headed across town to the Reid Memorial Church to give a concert with St George's School. In the first half, our choir (left) and the Close Harmony Group performed a variety of music, and in the second half, St George's Sinfonia performed a couple of classical symphony movements. They were joined by their chamber choir for one piece, and the latter also sang some unaccompanied works.

Easter Holidays & Week 1

Term began for the pupils on Wednesday morning with the usual start of term service. Games and activities programmes started in dull and cool weather most afternoons. Some members of Pringle are rehearsing hard with St George's girls for their upcoming musical production in two weeks time. The Shell rock band Mystic Floorboards performed in the final of the Battle of the Bands competition on Friday evening, with most of their year group in support at a club in town.

During the holidays Miss MacMillan, J5's teacher, got married. Members of the ski trip were in France on the day, and sent her the greeting pictured. Clearly, she needs to give them more spelling lessons. A CCF camp for IV Form preparing for the Duke of Edinburgh's Bronze Award went to northern Scotland with Dr Wilkinson and another group of IV Form pupils were taken on a trip to Iceland by the Geography Department.
