charlesCharles, V Form, has just won a place at the UK Schools Memory Championships National Final, which will be held on 7th July in Northampton.  Charles will represent Scotland as the only finalist from a Scottish school.

In its second year the UK Schools Memory Championship has been set up by Inspire Education to support schools in embedding skills which have a direct impact on attainment levels across multiple subjects.
Thousands of pupils from schools all over the UK have taken part in the Championships.  Merchiston got involved back in March, when eight times World Memory Champion, Dominic O’Brien, visited the School to deliver a memory training session to a group of thirty boys.

Dominic O'Brien commented: “The UK Schools Memory Championship has been created to help pupils discover the Mind Sport of Memory and to develop their mental skills to aid them with their studies.  With exam success dependent on making good use of one's memory, mastering memorization techniques early on is a great platform for success.”

In a follow up to this session the boys were put to the test at the end of April, with a series of memory challenges.  Winner Charles explained: “We had to try to memorise, against the clock, strings of numbers, words, and binary numbers, historic and future dates, and the order of a shuffled pack of cards.”

After an intensive memorising session the boys had to recall as much information as possible.  Charles continues: “We had to try to remember as much as we could to see who had memorised the most.  I found memorising cards the hardest.  I enjoyed taking part, and I look forward to representing Merchiston in the final.”

The School looks forward to supporting Charles at the final in July. History Teacher James Dixon commented: “This is the first time we have taken part in the competition and the boys have really benefited from the memory training, which should aid them in their forthcoming exams.  We all wish Charles the best of luck at the Final.”
