5 boys from the III Form and the IV Form
Archie, Matthew Lewis , Scott and Angus, and 5 girls from St George’s have just returned from their exchange to Philadelphia. A teacher from St Georges took the group out and taught while she was there. Matthew describes the trip:
We all flew from Edinburgh airport half way through the Easter holiday, to America where we met a teacher from GFS. Then we went on the famous yellow school bus which then took us to the school in Germantown where we got a great welcome from our host families.
The next day was our first day at GFS and we were given our timetables, lunch tickets and all the information we needed to know to start. The school was very different from Merchiston for they had periods of silence and the work place was different. There was generally more discussion in class, but you really had to listen, because the outcome of doing less writing and more discussing in class is a very long prep or, as they call it, homework.
It was not all work at GFS. There was also sport, such as baseball, athletics and tennis all of them quite important at the school.
The exchange pupils also went down to Washington DC and saw the White House and the Air and Space Museum and other famous things such as the Washington Monument. Some also went to New York which was a great experience.
This American exchange trip was brilliant and a great experience and I would recommend anyone who is going into IV form or III Form to go if they have the chance.
