On a beautifully sunny May 14th afternoon, Mr King, Mr George, Miss Tully and Jasper the dog took the AS Biology students to the Berwickshire coast to do some Ecology field work as part of the Biology course. We went to Cove bay first, a stunning rocky shore, to study the zonation of seaweed species.

When we arrived we found a young grey seal basking on the rocks and took some photos of it with the boys. It took umbrage and slid off into the sea. Mr King and Mr George both managed to get wet feet slipping into rock pools but we collected some new creatures for the Biology department marine tank first.

We then drove back towards Edinburgh and stopped off at Yellowcraigs, near North Berwick to study the sand dune ecosystem there. This accomplished, we then embarked upon a departmental barbeque of burgers, sausages and lamb kebabs, a swim in the sea and various beach games. A fun time was had by all and the boys learnt much about coastal ecology.
