Members of the IV form arrived safely in Iceland late on Sunday night, 13th April. We awoke to thick lying snow in Reykjavik but clear blue skies. The morning saw us bathing in natural hot springs at the Blue Lagoon (pic below) and then we went on a tour of the major volcanic sites of SW Iceland. These included the rift valley marking the boundary between the Eurasian and American continental plates and the geysirs which explode boiling steam and water 20 metres ino the air. On Tuesday we headed onto the glacier armed with ice axes and crampons and then took a short hop flight out to the volcanic islands off the south coast of Iceland to study the major 1973 eruption on Heimey which the fishermen defeated by spraying water on the lava front to protect their village!
