The school aims to develop the full academic potential of each pupil, to give him a thorough grounding in basic skills and traditional subjects and then to foster his particular talents to enable him to move on, well prepared for the next stage of his life, whether it be university or direct entry into a career. The benefits of single-sex education in enhancing academic performance have been well publicized in recent years, and the school is firmly committed to its boys only status.

Merchiston is a boys' boarding and day school on the outskirts of Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh. There are 437 pupils, of whom around 140 are in the Sixth Form, and 100 in the Junior School (Pringle).
