HM Inspectorate of Schools visited Merchiston in March 2002 to follow-up its Standards and Quality Inspection report of May 2000. The later report, which covered key aspects of the school at all stages, identified Merchiston's major strengths as its educational philosophy, the relationship with parents and Board of Governors, the quality of care for the pupils and efficiency of leadership of the school.

The results of the follow-up visit, announced by HMI in June 2002, revealed that it was pleased with the progress Merchiston had made in five areas that the May 2000 report had recommended for improvement. In addressing the points for action, the school had taken an 'imaginative but rigorous approach'.

In June 2003, HMI published a report on Health and Welfare, in which they rated all aspects of the School's provision as either Very Good or Good.

In June 2005, the School underwent the first of the new joint HMI/Care Commission Inspections, and received an exceptionally good report. This commented on all aspects of the welfare of pupils. Under the regular inspection regime, the last visit by the Care Commission was in March 2009, and the report may be downloaded via this link (pdf file).
