On Wednesday 10 June, 28 Merchistonians who joined the School before 1950 gathered in the Old Library for a reunion.  It was the second such reunion to take place, the first being held in June 2007.

Merchistonians and their spouses were welcomed by the Headmaster, who gave a brief but detailed outline of how the School was performing, and drew the group’s attention to some of the bigger changes that had taken place since they had left School.  The Headmaster then handed over to Chris Gray, President Elect of the Merchistonian Club, who said a few words.  Chris mentioned the guests who had travelled long distances to attend the reunion, in particular J N Usherwood who had travelled from California!  Chris also pointed out W W Yellowlees as being the most “experienced” Merchistonian in attendance!

The group then went on tours of the School, ably guided by boys from the Lower Sixth Form.  The tours made a point of visiting the newest parts of the School, namely the Robertson Building, Spawforth Library and of course Laidlaw House.  The Merchistonians were very impressed indeed with the facilities in Laidlaw, and some recalled, upon hearing of the en suite facilities in each room, how they had had to make do with cold baths every few days!

After a delicious lunch back in the Old Library, the guests had time to wander around the grounds at their own pace, with a few going down to watch a Pringle cricket match against Cargilfield.  The day was rounded off with the Headmaster leading a rousing rendition of The School Song, followed by some very talented musicians from the School giving performances on the recorder and bagpipes. Special thanks go to Alan Mickel who helped organise a very successful event.
