Dear Mountain Friends, here are details of this year's JRFMMMMM, which is to be held from As agreed at last year's meet in Crianlarich, this year we are heading for Harris House in the hamlet of Hardraw, 2.5km N of Hawes in Wensleydale, which is one of the Northern Dales. Our accommodation is a converted school owned by William Hulme's Grammar School in Manchester and administered by none other than John Hardy (ex-Merchiston staff). There are no spectacular mountains, but the Yorkshire Dales National Park has "bleak and lonely gritstone moors...the imprint of glaciation, fields, walls and barns of rich pasture land; isolated farmsteads and villages". in nearby Hawes is the Wensleydale Creamery where cheese-lovers can taste various versions of Wallace and Gromit's favourite chees, while visiting the tempting shop and café. The keener walkers will wish to visit the tops of Whernside, Ingleborough and Pn-y-ghent, and see the limestone pavements so foreign to Scottish walkers. To gain and idea of the many general tourist attractions of the area, log on to www.yorkshiredales.org
Accommodation: the outdoor centre Harris House in Hardraw is fairly similar to the converted school we have used at Grange-in-Borrowdale. It can accommodate 36, divided into various bedrooms, which comprise either 2 sofa beds, or 8 bunk beds - so space for families is available. The beds have comfortable mattresses, but you will need a sleeping bag (pillows optional). Catering will be organised for Saturday breakfast and evening meal, and Sunday breakfast, but please organise your own packed lunches. Let me know on the enclosed form if you require accommodation at the centre. If you wish B&B or similar, John has offered to give details of what's available locally - his home number is 0161 486 0855, or email him at jhardy@whgs.co.uk during the school term.
Socialising: we will stay in the centre for this, but a visit to the adjacent Green Dragon hotel for local atmosphere/beer at some point is recommended. If you play a musical instrument, don't forget to bring it (pianos and drums excepted).
Assembly for each day will be in the car park outside the bunkhouse for 9.30 a.m., to finalise intended routes and transports. your ideas are welcome, so come to prepared having read guidebooks and maps - OS map 98 1:50000 is the relevant one.
Having read this you can get me on the number below (24hr ans. machine), and I'll be at home after early September for those late enquiries!
Start thinking about the JRFM wk/end read over the appropriate guidebooks, maps. etc. organise your friends, and if you can, let me know of your intentions on the enclosed form. After this year, I'm standing down as organiser, and the future of the meet is therefore unclear at present, but i hope to see you all in late September, and have a pleasant summer.
