Dear Kirstine, My cousin Hamish Connell left me today with many happy memories of returning to our old school. We did so enjoy the Remembrance Service, so very well attended. Well done Merchiston! A wonderful service, my first as you know- I do hope to join you next year (Hamish lives somewhat further afield). From our entry to school for coffee until we departed through the school gates- we felt we had been so very warmly welcomed into “friends of Merchiston”. It is a fact of life that I served with the Royal Scots in Korea 1953-1954. I am very proud to continue the school ‘connection’ with our local famous regiment! I have followed for some time now a school “up and coming piper” Duncan Biggar, and his Dad, Mum and elder brother Jamie live quite near me and so it was with great interest I listened to his playing of ‘The Flowers of the Forest’. Duncan did us proud and I phoned his Dad to let him know! I will conclude by thanking you Kirstine, for organising Hamish and I. We had a very happy morning at Merchiston. The grounds [look] superb with their golden autumn leaves! I hope we meet soon again… All best wishes, DP Sommerville |
