How much will it cost?

Please see the linked pdf document for the current year's fees.

Fees include tuition and boarding costs, food (and snacks) and some travel to sporting fixtures. Fees do not include items such as Music lessons, trips and outings, uniform, insurances, guardianship costs (for pupils resident outside the UK), stationery and equipment, examination charges, books. Your attention is also drawn to the School Fees Protection Scheme, and the Student's Personal Accident Insurance Scheme (all boys are automatically included in this). Details of some extras may be found by clicking the link.

The first term’s fees will be payable by the first day of term, and an invoice is sent out in June or July. Unless agreed otherwise by the school, fees are payable termly and must be paid by the first day of term. There are 3 terms in each year. Other arrangements for fee payment may be available on application to the Assistant Bursar (Finance), Mrs Caroline McIntosh. If, after your son joins the school, fees are outstanding, the school reserves the right to refuse to allow your child to continue attending the school (or may withhold references) whilst fees remain unpaid. The school reserves the right to charge interest on sums which are outstanding.

Please note that the deposit, once paid, is non-refundable if you fail to take up an accepted place, or if you withdraw your son from the school without giving the required period of notice. For further details, please see our Terms & Conditions of Entry. If you accept a place for your child by completion of an Acceptance Form, and then fail to take this up at an agreed date, the school reserves the right to charge a sum equivalent to the first term’s fees in lieu of such notice.

It is a requirement of entry to Merchiston that your financial obligations to other schools must be fulfilled before your son can enter school.

There are reductions in fees for brothers in school at the same time (5% for the second son, and 20% for the third son); for the sons of serving members of HM Forces (10%), and for daughters attending some of our ‘sister’ schools (Kilgraston School, Perth; Queen Margaret's School, York and Casterton School, Cumbria). Apply to the Admissions Department for further details.

The school is a charity, and wants pupils to come to Merchiston to further develop their talents, irrespective of financial circumstances. Financial assistance may be available in the form of Scholarships or Bursaries. For more information on fees, including planning for school fees, insurance and medical schemes, please contact the Assistant Bursar (Fees), Caroline McIntosh, on 0131 312 2217. Further information about financial planning for school fees, applying for scholarships and bursaries, and support from Educational Trust Funds is also available from the Independent Schools Council Information Service (ISCis) website, in the Parentzone area of the site:  www.isc.co.uk/ParentZone_WhatDoesItCost.htm.
