Richard Charman
(Head of Physical Education)
Richard graduated from Canterbury with a BA(Hons) and a PGCE in 1998 and taught at Sir William Borlase's Grammar School, Marlow before joining Merchiston in 2000. He was appointed Head of PE in 2002. He teaches both GCSE and AS PE and continues to teach Maths through to Higher. He is also in charge of Tennis, Swimming, Basketball, the Senior Sports Options and coaches the D1 rugby team.
Charles Swan (Director of Sport)
Charles is a Merchistonian who left to gain a Certificate of Education at Loughborough and teach for 13 years at Ratcliffe College as Master i/c Sport, coaching the 1stXV and 1st XI, before returning in 1987. Charles teaches PE right through the curriculum and also enjoys teaching History. He is the Director of Sport at Merchiston and still remains Master in Charge of Cricket and Fives, coaching the 1st XI, the B1 XV and the Senior and Colts Fives teams.
Mark Appleson (Director of Rugby)
Mark graduated after three years of study in Leeds with an Honours degree, and taught at The City of London Freemen's School and Manchester Grammar School before joining Merchiston in 2001. He is a former Scotland Internationalist and he played club rugby for London Scottish, Sale Sharks and Leeds Tykes. He teaches AS PE, PE, Swimming, Learning Support and History. He is the Director of Rugby at Merchiston and coaches the 1st XV and Cup XV.
